Dr Bill Kellner-Read qualified as a dentist from King’s College Hospital, London in 1977. After a brief time as a junior dental officer, he moved into general practice. The routine of drilling and filling soon sent Dr Bill looking for more interesting and absorbing areas of dentistry: "After a while, fillings are about as interesting as watching paint dry, except that paint comes in more colours!"
In his practice, he saw more and more people who suffered headaches. Some were self-inflicted after a game of rugby. Others were genuine, daily headaches. These were people who were given Valium and told to live with their pain – people who, for many days at a time, were shut in a darkened room in misery, waiting for the latest episode to pass. This area was to become the focus of a long career, treating chronic pain of dental origin. The Pankey Institute in Miami, Dr. Harold Gelb DDS of New York, Dr. Richard Pertes DDS of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey and Dr. Aelred Fonder DDS of Rock Falls, Illinois – all these people and organisations and more, were instrumental in Dr Bill's early education in this field.
The whole area of head and neck pain dovetails into the overall concept of biological dentistry. Dr Bill began to look at the materials he was using in practice that could adversely affect his patients. Fluoride compounds, mercury and root fillings came under scrutiny, as did oral hygiene products and the area of nutrition.
It was not long before Dr Bill was introduced to the health concepts of Hans Selye, an Austrian-Hungarian endocrinologist whose famous and revolutionary concept of stress opened countless new avenues of treatment for disease. Selye was Founder and Director of the Institute of Experimental Medicine and Surgery at the University of Montreal and has been regarded as `the father of stress`. His concepts have been a great help in understanding the complexity and accumulation of stressors that ultimately bring about the downfall of the body.
Dr Bill’s professional life has taken him from England to Australia and back. He has sought, learned and lectured on the myriad answers to questions that have been posed by patients earnestly seeking better health. In his travels he has taken a greater interest in the need for good nutritional supplementation as an aid not just to general health but also to dental health. He came to realise that while tooth cleaning is important so is nutrition. With heart disease, stroke and diabetes being linked to dental disease he could not fail to realise the nutritional connection. It was out of this concept of that he set up the Fresh Breath Health Centres in Gravesend, England and Graz, Austria.
